Volunteering at the Sambhali Trust
- Ana Maus, September 2013 -

My name is Ana Maus, I am 19 years old and I was born in Mexico.
I finished high school in June and I am currently living in Jodhpur, India working in Sambhali Trust. This is an ONG that provides educational and economic opportunities to girls and women of very low castes. I work in the Jodhpur Empowerment Center giving basic english classes to women. It is very interesting and motivating to observe their eagerness to learn. They are always interested in learning something new and they pay a lot of attention to the lessons.

It is very interesting to be in contact with a culture so different from mine in which education to women is not very valued. And the way of viewing the sense of life is completely different also. In the evenings I work as an English teacher in a boarding home. Twenty girls, between 6 to 13 years old, from a village called Setrawa currently live in this boarding home. These girls were given a scholarship to study at a private school in Jodhpur. In the morning the girls go to school and in the evenings we help them review what they learned that day, to study and read in English. We also we play with them. It is very poignant to see the sisterhood relationship they've developed between them by the coexistence in the house. Girls are very loving and they always have a very positive attitude every situation.

Apart from the satisfaction it gives me to be able to pass a little bit of my knowledge to people who did not have the same opportunities as me, I know that I am making a difference in the lives of these girls and women and that is the best part of the project. I never imagined how much I could learn from these people. This experience has enriched me in a way that I never imagined. I highly recommend it.
