-Spirituality
Sophie’s own spirituality was one that developed and changed
in her lifetime but it was always one that moved her towards ‘the
light of God’s love revealed in the Heart of Christ’1
. Her journey was a reaching out from the dark place of Jansenism,
with its emphasis on a distant God and the innate evil within
the human being to the place of love, peace and self-acceptance-
I am loved and accepted by God just as I am.
We can follow Sophie in this awareness of living with paradox
in our lives, the need to live with contradictions, to face uncertainty,
to hear the other, to be open to change, to balance the tension
of light and shadow in everyday life, to hold together contradicting
forces, to find the equilibrium of “Cor Unum et Anima Una
in Corde Jesu.”
Like Sophie, we must move to that place of love, peace and self-acceptance.
Even that journey is a paradox. We must both stand still and
journey on. As Meister Eckardt says “we make progress by
stopping”. Sophie herself suggests a way to make that journey
towards love and peace - “In prayer we come to Him with
everything that touches our life, with the sufferings and hopes
of humanity. We learn to remain in silence and poverty of heart
before Him”2
On 25th May take a few minutes to pray as Sophie prayed: find
a quiet place; stop; “be still and know I am God”3
; let God “be” in the silence within. “This
is a journey we have to make, a pilgrimage to our own heart”4
It is said that when each of us has peace in her heart then
we can bring peace and justice to the world at large. “The
peace, the stillness, the harmony we experience in meditation
become the basis for all our action”5

‘Interior Life’ corner
This Thursday, 25th May, not only is it the Feast of the Ascension but we also
celebrate the birth in heaven of Saint Madeleine –Sophie Barat!
A happy coincidence of the calendar… the 25th May 1895,
the day of her death, was also the Thursday of the Ascension!
On the previous Sunday – was she talking about the coming
Feast on the Thursday or her imminent death which she felt
was not far away? She said to the Community;’ We
must see each other today, for on Thursday we are going to
Heaven!’
On the occasion of this 25th May, I would like to share with
you one of her thoughts on the subject of ‘the interior
life’ which was so dear to her. (With these words ‘interior
life’ Saint Madeleine-Sophie was talking about the relationship
between the person and God)
In June 1827, she wrote:
‘If only I could describe to you the joy of a
soul totally given to the Holy Spirit, without holding anything
back! If only I could tell you what was taking place
within her! It is no longer she who is acting, it is
God; she only responds to her inspirations…a constant
communication link is established between heaven and this soul..
She finds the secret of penetrating hearts; as it is not her
who is acting, she has no thought of self; she goes so far
as to ignore that she is doing the good, and has only one desire,
to follow in everything and always the impulse of the Holy
Spirit.’
In 1844, during a conference for the novices at Jette, she
said to them;
‘The inner soul resembles a flower which constantly
turns towards the sun in order to receive its beneficial rays..’
To each members of AMASC, Have a beautiful and happy Feast,
this 25th May!
At Saint Madeleine -Sophie’s shrine, I ask her to make
this desire grow in us, of wanting to turn towards God’s
sun in order to experience some of this happiness!

trouve le secret de pénétrer les cœurs ;

esa felicidad !
