24th June 06: For the Feast of the Sacred Heart
This Friday 24th June, Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus!
What are we going to celebrate?
- A confidence without any limits in the Father, source of all Life
- A life given to the end: that of the Son of God
- A love of infinite tenderness for the young, hearts open and pure, the children, the women, the sick, the sinners…
- A compassion which no adversity can halt…on the contrary, a love which attracts adversity
- An inexhaustible source of pure and healing water, born from a heart wounded by the rejection of love
- A “yes” to love and to truth which is unconditional
….and also, for each of us: an invitation to love with him and like him
On the Feast of the Sacred Heart, St.Madeleine Sophie used to talk to the Sisters in her Community. Today, it is to each one of us that she repeats these words:
“We have been chosen to renew the devotion to the Heart of Jesus. It is not a question of a heart of flesh, but as the heart is the centre where all the faculties of the soul are reunited, it is in this sense that the Divine Heart of Jesus is worthy of our adoration and of our love…In Him we can truly glorify God, love Him as he deserves to be loved, draw from there at their source all the virtues, above all humility, as Jesus said to us:’ Learn from me that I am gentle and humble of Heart.’”
(From the Poitiers Journal)
For our prayer:
- I thank the Lord for the gift of his limitless love
- I allow myself to be penetrated by this love and recall a moment when I experienced it
- To love with and like him: what step does Jesus invite me to make?
“He wants to make use of us, no doubt, but only as instruments and not as prime movers. Let him act. Let us be like the gardener who cultivates and tills the land, removing the weeds; but once the seed has been sown, he has no other concern than that of watering and removing the insects or other enemies of the plant.” (Letter of 1850)

¿Qué vamos a celebrar ?

Reflection for the Feast of the Sacred Heart Friday June 23 2006

We all know what it is to “lose heart”. And we all know what it is to receive the encouragement of friends and family who remind us to “take heart”. In the English language the word “heart” is used in so many ways to express that connection with our own or another’s hidden centre1 and the language “of the heart” often expresses a response to the encounter with love. “The centre of all centres is the God who is love”2

“The heart is the dwelling place where I am, where I live; according to the Semitic or biblical expression, the heart is the place “to which I withdraw” The heart is our hidden centre, beyond the grasp of our reason and of others; only the Spirit of God can fathom the human heart and know it fully. The heart is the place of decision, deeper than our psychic drives. It is the place of truth, where we choose life or death. It is the place of encounter, because as images of God we live in relation: it is the place of covenant3

“The Kingdom of God is within you”4

On this Feast of the Sacred Heart take a moment to stay with this phrase, chew over it and allow the truth to permeate your whole being.

Now consider these words:

“The kingdom of God is the power of divine love released into every fibre of our being… the Kingdom is an experience that must be known from within. It is the knowing of it that harmonises us, that integrates us. This knowing can only be known through the power of divine love. It can only be known by opening our hearts and minds to the heart and mind of Jesus. It can only be known by opening our consciousness to his.”5

“Cor Unum et Anima Una in Corde Jesu”

The journey to our heart creates for us a sense of the “sacred”- a sense of God’s presence, a sense of God’s purpose always being worked out, always being accomplished in the midst of our ordinary life. Finding the sacred dimension in everything. “There is no such thing as anything that is purely secular if our heart is open to God’s presence and to his purpose”6.

How do we “open our heart” to this Presence, to the mystery of the love of Christ at work within us? “Know from your own heart, from your own experience that you were created for infinite expansion of spirit.”7 We do this in the prayer of silence, beyond thoughts, beyond imagination, beyond words, the prayer in which we are simply in the Presence. “If we really want to pray we must first learn to listen, for in the silence of the heart, God speaks.”
