The RSCJs have started an online retreat on the 21 November, Feast of the Presentation of Mary. It is also the birthday of the Society as Sophie Barat and her first companions made their first commitment on that day in 1800.

Foundress - Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat rscj - 1779-1865

What is the Society of the Sacred Heart?
The Society of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic religious congregation of women.
From the beginning, and for the first century and a half, the aim of the Congregation was expressed principally in the education of youth through schools and colleges.

Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat, rscj

Saint Philippine Duchesne, rscj

After the Second World War, a changed world posed new challenges; the Religious of the Sacred Heart found a new way of carrying out their mission of education. Madeleine Sophie's own concept of education has helped them in their search; for the Foundress, the aim of teaching was to form girls who would become solidly Christian women, committed to the society of their day. She saw education, then, as the means of transforming society and strengthening the social fabric. That is why the Religious of the Sacred Heart carry out their service of education in three fields of action:

  • teaching and formation
  • * human development and the promotion of justice
  • * pastoral work and guidance in the faith.
