President's Message
Dear Alumnae,
Christmas is a time of giving. It’s a time of celebrating the wonder of Christ’s birth and the hope He has given all on Earth. It’s a time of peace and goodwill .. it is a time of remembering others ... of being inclusive and not exclusive ... of giving of oneself to relationships. The AMASC team here in Sydney wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
We down here in the Southern Hemisphere are just on the cusp of our long Summer holidays. Summer to me is Christmas, the Cricket Test Matches (major cricket matches between several countries of the British Commonwealth, England, Australia, South Africa, West Indies, New Zealand, India, Pakistan and, Zimbabwe.) This year Australia is playing England here over the summer. I particularly love the week between Christmas and New Year ... long, hot, hazy, lazy days with the sound of the cricket in the background on radio or television: the lovely sound of the thwack of the leather ball as it hits the bats ... commentators discussing the long five day matches ... they talk about “previous best scores” (the statistics they produce would earn an economist a PhD degree!!!) The game is described in a language most of us don’t understand ... all the field positions “silly mid on”, “the outer field”, “gully”, “leg by”, etc. I have no comprehension of what they mean ... yet I just love the language .. I love the game. The commentators speak English with a variety of accents - English, West Indian, South African, etc. The game on television is so attractive ... large playing fields contained within white picket fences and all the players dressed in long whites “flannels” (trousers). Often at the Sydney Cricket Ground (hallowed turf for many!!) there are seagulls on the field ... almost watching the game in flocks!
This period of time between Christmas and New Year -- and for those lucky enough to have holidays in January, it’s a time for reading all the books one is given for Christmas; for long chats with family and friends; attending many of the events of the month-long Festival of Sydney in January; a time of fireworks on the Harbour for New Years Eve and Australia Day (January 26th). It’s a time we all need for recuperation ... rest and recreation after a long, busy year.
This year has been such a rich experience for me. Firstly the visit to Mexico for the World Conference: such wonderful days prior to the Conference with our Mexican friends; then the opportunity to exchange so many ideas with so many at the conference; then to come home and establish the Sydney AMASC Secretariat. The synergy this team creates is quite wonderful ... such a positive, happy, intelligent and competent group. It has been a time of great creativity ... the Website ... the study plan ... and the early preparations for the Sydney 2002 Conference here.
Travel to Europe for the OMAAEEC Conference in October enabled me to visit the alumnae in Bombay, London, Madrid, Seville, Grenada, Lisbon, Barcelona and the added bonus of meeting with the European Committees in Mallorca. We shared ideas about communication on the internet and about the study plan on Reconciliation; we shared our cultures and our alumnae activities; I met with Principals and senior students; I was showered with hospitality and just loved meeting so many old friends and new. [I shall be reporting on my visit in the January newsletter.]
And on Saturday, December 5, my elder son, Philip was married to Samantha in the most beautiful ceremony. Jeff would have been so proud of his son and as delighted as I am about the marriage. It was a wonderful family celebration ... much joy and happiness.
Thank you all for your involvement in AMASC. We have heard so often from some countries and not so often from others. We do encourage your participation. This is our richness ... the opportunity we have as members of a world association to share so much with one another. We must make the most of it, otherwise we are neglecting an extraordinary opportunity for personal growth and collective development.
We wish you and your families and friends a wonderful Christmas and many blessings in the New Year. You will all be remembered in our Midnight Masses on Christmas Eve as we pray for you and your families. May we all participate to the full early in 1999 by creating vital study groups for our study of Reconciliation and through the process may we learn the art of reconciling ourselves with ourselves, with our God, our families and communities and then learn to move into the shoes of others ... to see things from other perspectives and points of view. We have a wonderful yet challenging few years ahead.
