Cindy Chang - President of Taiwan Sacred HeartAlumnae Association

Taiwan Sacred Heart Alumnae Association organized the first ever fund raising auction on May 25th, to support the various activities held by the SH education foundation. We collected in the past months over 100 items donated by alumnae, alumnae's friends and families.  Items such as second hand gifts, ornaments, home appliances, champagne, handbags, scarfs, crystals... etc. all of which at zero cost to us.
We successfully raised €14000, which is 80% of our rather aggressive target amount. A basketball with Jeremy Lin's signature alone raised €4500! More importantly, all alumnae, teachers, parents...had a great time together!

Report from AUSTRIA 2013
European Alumnae/i Congress in Austra
Since February 2012, when the European ANASC-presidents met in Naples/Italy invited by the European board, the vision of a first European Alumnae/i Congress in Vienna began to be realized step by step.

On April 4th 2013 our guests from eight European countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Spain) as well as our AMASC president Pam Snyder and her and our friend Francisca Sabadie-Burke from the USA arrived in Vienna.
You can imagine that it did not take long for an analogy to be drawn to the historical “Congress of Vienna” in 1815 but you can believe that ours was quite different!

We met at the Sacred Heart Convent/School Vienna where the School (“Institut Sacré-Cœur”) is now run by the Diocese instead of by the nuns. After the formal Congress opening by our Austrian president Uschi Kokalj, Sr Christel Peters and Sr. Hanni Woitsch from the RSCJ warmly welcomed our guests before their very interesting reports on the current situation of the Sacred Heart order.
Then the Headmaster of the school, Mr. Hallwirth gave a very impressive report on the participation of the school in the network that exists among Sacred Heard schools throughout the world which network is working very well and still expanding.
When some pupils from the upper classes talked about their “Compassion Project”, we knew that the famous and often cited “Esprit du Sacré-Cœur” is still alive in the young Sacred Heart generation.

On Friday evening, April 5th, the Congress Opening Mass was celebrated by Rev. Weismayer from St. Stephen’s Chapter and in his sermon he referred to our current AMASC motto “Listening with one Heart”; the school choir demonstrated its musical competence beautifully.
At the reception in the church’s crypt everyone felt as if he or she was among friends; in good Viennese tradition, the guests were treated to delicious “Wiener Schnitzel” as the entrée, accompanied by equally delicious “Grüner Veltliner” for the wine.
On Saturday, April 6th, morning Sr. Paloma Fernandez de la Hoz, a member of the Catholic Social Academy in Vienna spoke about her research in Education as a way to Integration – distribution of goods/poverty – social circumstances in different societies and cultures.

In the afternoon there was a sightseeing tour through the City of Vienna on our program, guided by S.H.alumna Christa and her colleagues. In the evening our guests were brought to the famous village of “Grinzing”, known for its marvellous wine and special atmosphere; a “Dirndl-Fashion Show” was prepared by Martina (alumna of the S.H.-School) and her daughter, so that our guests could be introduced to the original Austrian clothing It was so enjoyable that it inspired Francisca to visit the shop and buy herself a long dirndl which she will wear to AMASC in 2014!
I hope that summarizing these few days in Vienna will bring back happy memories of the First European Alumnae/i Congress 2013 in Vienna to all the 140 participants and that those memories will last a very long time and has given an outlook to the AMASC Congress 2014 in Phoenix/Arizona.

Report from JASH
Kimiko Hotta, JASH President
Michiko Matsubara, JASH Vice-President

JASH Year 2013 began on April 1 for JASH’s annual activities, like the Japanese academic year, run from April to March of the following year. From the activities of JASH during the first half of JASH Year 2013, we would like to give an account of the “Gathering of the Young Alumnae” held on Saturday, June 29, 2013. This gathering, an annual event since 1987, is organized by the AMASC Tokyo Congress Commemorative Fund Committee, whose ultimate aim is to hand down the tradition of JASH and AMASC to the younger generation
The purpose of the gathering each year is to rouse interest in JASH and AMASC among young JASH members and to encourage them to participate in alumnae activities. Particularly this year, the Committee aimed at promoting the 15th AMASC World Congress which was announced to be held from November 6 to 9, 2014. Amongst the fifteen young, there were two 12th graders of the Sacred Heart School in Tokyo and three students of the University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo. These very young newcomers added special zest and liveliness to the meeting. At the beginning, Sueko Watanabe, Head of the Committee, and Kimiko Hotta, President of JASH, explained the history and activities of the Committee, JASH, and AMASC using PowerPoint. Next, one of the Committee members introduced Scottsdale, Arizona, the site for the coming AMASC Congress, and showed several beautiful pictures on the screen. Additionally, a participant of the Malta Congress in 2010 shared her experiences using photographs.
Finally, a group of young alumnae members, who have been studying the theme of the next Congress, “Listening with One Heart,” gave a summary on the interim report which they presented in front of Pamela Snyder, AMASC President, and Anne de Broglio, ASCA President and AMASC Board Member, on JASH Day (March 20, 2013) utilizing the Facebook. After the presentations, all enjoyed the friendly atmosphere talking to one another over a light meal prepared as always by the Committee members. At the end of the gathering several young members expressed much interest in the 2014 AMASC World Congress, which was indeed reassuring for the future of the Committee, of JASH, and of AMASC.

Report from England
Elisabeth McCausland, President

‘Listening with one heart’ the motto we have been guided by since the last conference in Naples has proved challenging. Our group has not expanded. We try to attract young but it is difficult to do so.  The AMASC Hurlingham Club Lunch for Saint Madeline Sophie day  on 24thMay at Hurlingham Club was well attended and we look forward to the October lunch.
The new AMASC website keeps us up to date with Society and AMASC News and in its new format is proving to be a great success.
We would love to encourage new members and will attend Old Girls days at the Schools . There is also a possibility that England and wales with join up with AMASC Ireland and Scotland.
European Conference in Vienna
The visit to Vienna and the  conference at the convent and school was fabulous . Sr. Hanni Woitsch rscj and the Austrian team under Ursula Kokalj spared no efforts to make our stay enjoyable. The topics of youth unemployment and migration were discussed and Convent students were being encouraged to embrace the problem with practical help.

Ursula and team on the platform. It is well worth while visiting the website at
http://www.sacrecoeur.at/wien_2013/wien2013_index.htm

Elisabeth McCausland, President, attended the Old Girls day at Woldingham with Anna Clark (Treasurer) and they will attend the Hammersmith reunion on 28th September. We keep in touch with the schools through Hilary Thompson the schools co-ordinator. She is currently in Uganda with the summer project group from Fenham Newcastle and will report on her return.
The Janet Erskine Stuart celebratory year has begun at Hoddleston  and many will attend the events  advertised on the website. The Academic Conference at the University of Roehampton June23rd –June 26th 2014 followed on June 27th by mass and supper at Digby Stuart College and a trip to Cottismore Janet’s birthplace on 28th June. CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF SACRED HEART ALUMNAE (CASHA)
A highlight for the Sacred Heart family in Canada has been the amalgamation of the US and Canadian Provinces into the new United States Canada Province.  This has come about following much discussion and discernment and was formalized with a beautiful liturgy at the Sacred Heart School of Halifax in July.  Over forty religious and many alumnae and friends were in attendance to celebrate with the Sisters.

The alumnae chapter from Montreal revived the publication of a newsletter in an attempt to be more connected with their membership. It should go a long way to reenergizing their chapter and they are to be congratulated for recognizing the value of staying in touch. Both the Montreal and Halifax schools welcomed the graduates of 2013 into the Alumnae/i as the school year closed in June.

A delegation of Canadian alumnae attended the AASH conference in Omaha in April and were so pleased to share in the discussion and to hear wonderful speakers including Sister Shirley Miller, who had us walk through Duchesne Academy on a virtual tour with Saint Madeleine Sophie, and assured her that her charism was alive and well in Omaha and other places in 2013.  It was powerful and reaffirming.
Spring events were held in Vancouver, Ottawa, and Halifax.  Airlie Ogilvie, long -time President of the Vancouver chapter, has decided to resign after more than 30 years of leadership.  At present a team is examining a process of continuing this active group. Ottawa honoured the Sisters who, as a result of the new amalgamation, closed the Provincial office by preparing and making a presentation of a Memory book.  Many alumnae members wrote personal reflections about the influence and memories given them by the time spent at their Sacred Heart schools.  The booklet was prepared and received with much love. Halifax held a vibrant spring luncheon to introduce this year’s graduates to the membership.  Halifax also had a dedication ceremony of The Crossroads (an outdoor meeting and reflection space) to mark the donation by the family of the late Carolyn King, an alumna of the school.

2013 Procession of the Lanterns at Kincoppal Rose Bay School for Girls

Report from COLOMBIA
President:
ROSA CRISTINA JARAMILLO

UNASC COLOMBIA
UNASC Colombia continues to work enthusiastically in their set goals for 2010-2014.
Regional Associations of Bogota, Cali, Medellin and Manizales continue to raise funds to contribute to the different social work projects that are handled by their active volunteer members. We work with   emphasis in La Canasta de Mater which serves the needs of the alumni who require our services:  wardrobe, scholarships, medical insurance and personal visits are provided. Tomate un Cafecito Conmigo (Have a cup of coffee With Me) is an activity to promote solidarity among our sisters.  It has been growing to incorporate more members, acting as a liaison between the active alumni and attracting others in order to provide more help to those who need it.
The UNASC COLOMBIA Board meets every month to review the reports submitted by the various regional associations and also the policies that would be implement in the future. We are currently analyzing the work plan sent by AMASC to be worked during the months of 2013 and 2014 in preparation for our next World Congress. We're getting ready to send to each regional association  the material to be worked following the directions proposed  by AMASC.  We hope to bring a large delegation to this meeting.
Our main concern is the motivation for new alumnae to belong to our Association. Numbers of new members have been declining mainly because the number of schools has decreased in Colombia. In addition, the younger alumnae do not have enough time to work actively in the social work projects that we support.  Therefore, we are looking for programs that will attract more members and respond more to their concerns as well as the most pressing needs of our country at this time. The Government of our country is providing satisfactory support to most of the social welfare programs that we regularly are involved, so we would like to devote more time and energy to other high impact social need projects that are in more need of attention in Colombia today.

Reporte de ANASC-Cuba
President: Piedad Subirats

Review

In September 2011, at our AGM, Shelley Byers was elected as President of the Baradene Alumnae. Shelley has fulfilled her role with great enthusiasm, she and her committee have already initiated a number of wonderful activities and events.
Our Website was the first priority, within months www.baradenealumnae.co.nz was underway. This was hugely successful, the alumnae have responded Reviewwell and are now able to, access information about upcoming functions, and send their details, subscriptions and donations electronically.

Left: Shelley Byers, President
Right: Melanie Watson, Vice-President

In March this year several of our Sisters joined us for our AGM which began with Mass, the meeting ended with afternoon tea.
In March, “Alumnae Parents”, Grandmothers, Mothers and daughters (who are still students) mixed and mingled over nibbles and wine.
Review

The five year re-union, since leaving school, was held in July and has always been a huge success. Forty five young women gathered with their teachers to reunite. There was much laughter and loud chatter, indicative of strong friendships developed while attending Baradene College.

September is almost upon us and the excitement is building for a new initiative, “High Tea”, to be held for Alumnae who left school before 1980. An Alumnae, Dame Roseanne Meo will be the guest speaker, and for the first time there will be a special presentation for our “Alumnae of the Year”, an emeritus award.
During 2013 we have lost four of our RSCJ Sisters; Sr Grace Thompson, a dearly loved New Zealander who died in Australia, as was Sister Elizabeth Graham, who also died in Australia. Sister Kathleen Grace and Sister Theresa Brophy both died in Auckland.
We are now hoping to start our Study Plan in preparation for the AMASC conference to be held in Scottsdale, Arizona in November 2014. The theme - “Listening with one heart”.

Report from Mexico EXASAC Asociación National

Report from Associated Alumnae and Alumni of the Sacred Heart (AASH)
President:
Alice J. Burns

The Associated Alumnae and Alumni of the Sacred Heart (AASH) from the United States and parts of Canada, welcomed a new board of directors this summer at the start of the 2013-2015 Biennium. Led by President Alice J. Burns, the board met in June at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St Charles, Missouri.

The board was elected unanimously at the AASH National Conference in April in Omaha, Nebraska. Nearly 300 alums gathered to celebrate “Our Legacy in the Heartland,” a weekend filled with fellowship, renewal and excitement, along with some dancing and great food. Alice is joined on the Board by Vice President Mary L. Forsyth; Treasurer Gary Tom; Corresponding Secretary Joey Yao; Recording Secretary Kathleen Feeney; Central Regional Director Roselie Bellanca Posselius; Eastern Regional Director Rhonda Raffi Meegan; Southern Regional Director Jodie Thorne; and Western Regional Director Caitie O’Shea.

During the conference, Alice announced the theme of her biennium as Across the Generations, an effort to engage younger alums and assist our senior alums.  While young alums are undoubtedly the future, Alice said we should not forget our older graduates. “I would like us to acknowledge that some of our older alums are struggling to survive with such limited income that they are not meeting all their health needs,” Alice told attendees. “Then I want to find a way to help.”

At the end of the Omaha conference, Alice announced the 40th AASH National Conference will be April 9-12, 2015, in Boston. All alums of all Sacred Heart schools are invited - and indeed, encouraged - to attend.

Report from Association Nationale des Anciennes et Anciens du Sacré-Coeur de Belgique (ANASC)
President:
